Physical Education

At East Meon, we place a high priority on PE and school sport and actively promote engagement and participation in these areas. We are very proud to have recently been awarded a Gold Level School Games Award for our commitment to PE and school sport.

On Wednesdays, Mr Fooks and Mr Murray from Aspire come to school for the day and teach PE for one hour with all classes. They focus on teaching the games aspects of the National Curriculum through a range of sports, including football, tennis and cricket. The class teacher then teaches PE for their own class for one hour in the week, focusing on the gymnastics and dance aspects of the National Curriculum.

In Year 3/4, the children have school swimming lessons for one term, which takes place in either the Taro Leisure Centre or Churchers College. These lessons are focused on developing stamina and technique across the different strokes as well as introducing basic water safety skills, such as floating and treading water.

In Year 5/6, children take part in the National Bikeability Scheme, where they learn how to ride their bikes safely on the road.

Alongside our curriculum PE, there are many opportunities for children to take part in extra-curricular sports. We have a range of after-school sports clubs which vary across the year. We are a dedicated part of our district School Games cluster and regularly participate in competitions, festivals and events with other local schools. In recognition of our dedication, we were recently invited to take part in the Hampshire School Games and really enjoyed our day out in Winchester. As part of our Small Schools Group, we also organise and take part in sporting activities with these schools.

Each year, we hold a whole-school Sports Day in the Summer Term. The children compete in their house teams, wearing t-shirts in their house colour, and take part in skills-based activities in the morning and races in the afternoon. Parents, family members and carers are all invited to come and support the children for this event.

In the Summer Term, we also run a whole-school 'Challenge Week' where children are encouraged to challenge themselves across a range of different subjects and activities. As part of this week, we have one whole day dedicated to physical challenges. In 2024, the children experienced archery, kinball, fencing and gymnastics as part of this event.
