Writing

At East Meon, we provide a love of writing by promoting a rich vocabulary-filled environment. At the beginning of a child’s school journey, they will begin by learning to write all the letters and sounds. They are encouraged to use their phonics knowledge to sound out and make plausible attempts at spellings the words they wish to write.

As they move through Key Stage 1, they will further develop their writing skills to write for a range of purposes, such as adverts, recounts, fictional stories and poems. They will begin to learn spelling rules and develop their understanding of sentence structure and punctuation.

In Key stage 2, they begin to pay closer attention to the effect their writing has on the reader. They explore literary techniques through a variety of texts and authors and magpie these to use in their own writing. They also learn about more complex sentence structures and spelling rules.
